While the rest of the school enjoyed their mid-term break, 11 dedicated young environmentalists reached school by 8:00 am on a Saturday, 29th of October, 2016 to give a kick start to DGPS Can Collection Campaign for the academic year 2016-17. The Campaign that went on in the school from Sept 27th to October 26th was well initiated with a total collection of 70 kg (approx. 5,000 cans) of pure Aluminium Cans.
Mrs. Sabiha Shaikh, Environmental Coordinator, DGPS took these students to the Zabeel Park to deposit their cans with the Emirates Environmental Group in reply to their invitation to join them for their Can Collection Campaign for the year 2016. The students observed with pride and curiosity as to how their cans were weighed, amounts being noted down, bags being checked for pure aluminium cans and then loaded into huge pickups. All schools, corporate houses and organizations were invited to deposit their cans at different sites allotted by the EEG.
Our youngest active participant, Vaibhavi from FS2 was overwhelmed on being able to join the group to drop off the cans. Likewise, all our active participants were surprised to know the outcome of our collection after seeing the massiveness of the campaign. They now felt a greater sense of responsibility towards the Environment. They realized that this campaign had helped them to save a considerable amount of energy as well as a reasonable amount of greenhouse gases being released in the air as compared to making new aluminium cans from raw materials.
